Thurston’s Lobster Pound

Well, we learned a lot from our innkeepers son, Bill about lobsters. It seems as a young lad, Bill worked at Thurston’s Lobster Pound, a family owned business dating back 5 generations. He would get up after midnight and be on a lobster boat in the waters at 3:30am, bringing lobsters to the docks. We learned about soft shell or shedders and hard shelled lobsters and the true definition of an authentic lobster pound. 1

I guess we asked the right person for the best place to eat a lobster. So off we went that evening to Thurston’s about 40 minutes away… Real as real can get. The restaurant is built on the dock, Thurston’s has their own lobstermen, lobster boats docked at the pier.

Entering signs help you choose from Chicks, Halve pounds, to Jumbo – weighing in 1.80lb and over!

Dan selected his lobster (“Fred”) …

… and off we went to sit over the water.

The moment arrived…. A whole beautifully cooked lobster….now, Dan ponders, how do I crack into this beauty? With the help of a waitress who sees a face in distress, she proceeds to take the lobster piece by piece , teaching us the best way to enjoy the experience of eating a whole lobster.

Buoys will be buoys:

  1. A true lobster pound buys directly from the fishing boats, and stores, and resells lobsters to other business. Eating at a lobster pound assures that the lobster came off the boat fresh that day. The remainders are stored and the restaurants that they sell to may get a previous day’s catch. ↩︎

  1. Boy that lunch looked delicious! Question about the buoys, are those retired ones on the building, or ones that got detached by storms? I thought they were markers for something in the ocean.

    1. Those are lobster buoys, used by the lobstermen to mark their traps. They are a photographic cliche, but I can’t resist taking a picture of their varying colors every time.
